    Data and figures

    • Literacy rate: 88.4%
    • Illiteracy rate in adults: 11.6%
    • Net enrollment in primary education: 92.7%
    • Net enrollment in secondary education (middle level): 65.6%
    • The early childhood, primary and secondary population totals 2,398,990 students in 10,443 educational centers. 
    • 1,904,716 (79.4%) of primary and secondary students are in public school; 447,560 (18.7%) in private schools and 1.9% in the semi-official sector
    • Around 80% of teachers in primary and secondary education are females.
    • 93% of primary education teachers have a university degree.
    • 17 public schools are developing a bilingual program.  Corresponding teacher training in the English language is carried out with the collaboration of the University of Massachussets and the City College of New York.  The selected schools are located in the areas of the greatest tourism, duty-free and/or industrial development.  
    • Implementation of the school breakfast program in the public education system.  
    • Current university enrollment: 298,087 students. 
    • Percentage of youth between the ages of 18 and 24 that enroll in higher education: 16.74%
    • Higher education drop-out rate: between 50 and 70%.
    • Growth of technical education through the Proyecto Fondo para la Excelencia Académica, which plans to education between 2000 and 3000 information technicians and specialists.
    • Establishment of Institutos Técnicos Comunitarios (ITC), which will supply free higher technical education to low-income youth in areas especially meaningful to the productive development of their communities.  
    • The Dominican Republic has more than 40 centers of higher education.
