2017 Mirabal Sisters Festival Brings a Wealth of Culture to Villa Tapia
Villa Tapia, República Dominicana, November 23, 2017.

Beginning on Wednesday, November 22 the Mirabal Sisters Festival has found itself in Villa Tapia in a display of the cultural richness of the region. This year’s festival is dedicated to San Pedro de Macorís province and Mexico as the invited country of honor.

To formally open the festival, a ceremony presided over by Pedro Vergés, Minister of Culture (Minc), in representation of President Danilo Medina, was celebrated. During the ceremony, Vergés was accompanied by authorities from the Hermanas Mirabal province and throughout the region.

In the opening ceremony, Minister Vergés, Bautista Rojas Gómez, President of the Mirabal Sisters Festival Organizing Committee, and José Ernesto Abud, Mayor of Villa Tapia, gave addresses to the public in attendance.

In his remarks, Vergés spoke of the Ministry’s focus on a decentralization of resources that the government invests in the cultural sector – an effort that is based on the transfer of what is done in Santo Domingo to the country’s 31 provinces, and the transfer of the best of what is done in the provinces to the capital.

In effect, Vergés proposed a two-way street between the provinces and the capital “Because any other way makes little sense.”

“I am very pleased to be a part of this festival, because I see that it is an excellent platform for regional strengthening of the program of provincial decentralization that the Ministry of Culture is carrying out,” expressed Vergés.

Regarding the Mirabal Sisters Festival, Vergés highlighted the progress it represents and said that it is a valuable component of the Ministry’s policies.

Meanwhile, Bautista Rojas Gómez, President of the Organizing Committee for the festival, stated that its main objective is to preserve, foster, and promote all of the artistic initiatives, expressions, and cultural values of the Mirabal Sisters province, under the Provincial Development Plan.

He praised the festival’s efforts in making the province a destination for historical tourism through the Mirabal Sisters Museum and the Ruta de los Murales.

Lastly, José Ernesto Abud, Mayor of Villa Tapia, said that he hopes for the festival to become a reference point for cultural expressions in the Dominican Republic.

The event began with a performance of the National Anthem by school students from Villa Tapia accompanied by the Dominican Air Force band. Following the performance, a parade featuring a delegation of institutions from the Eastern region of the Dominican Republic took place. The opening ceremony concluded with a performance by Los Guloyas from San Pedro de Macorís.

In addition to other authorities, attending the festival were Danilo Díaz, Minister of Sports; Cayo Claudio Espinal, Vice Minister of Creativity and Public Engagement; Luis Rafael Yapur, Governor of the Mirabal Sisters Province; Pedro Mota, Director of the State Council on Sugar; Luis Miguel Piccirillo, Governor of San Pedro de Macorís Province; Juana Vicent, Congresswoman; Luis René Canaán, Senator; Jorge Rodríguez Ozuna, Director of the National Institute of Price Stabilization; and Yineida Fernández, Executive Vice President of the Festival.

The festival will continue to present a whole host of diverse activities until Sunday, November 26 in Villa Tapia.
