In the Royal Shipyards, Arismendy Campusano Exhibits “Los Guloyas de San Pedro de Macorís”
    Santo Domingo, September 19th 2017

Along with the presence of Tony Echavarría, mayor of San Pedro de Macorís and Reyes Moore, Director of the National Folklore Directorate (DINAFOLK), a division of the Ministry of Culture, Arismendy Campusano (El Conde) inaugurated his newest exhibition in the Royal Shipyards of Santo Domingo’s Ciudad Colonial.

Manuela Feliz, Deputy Director of DINAFOLK provided touching words of welcome to those in attendance at the inaugural ceremony. Xiomara Valete, provincial director of the Ministry of Culture, was also present. Campusano’s exhibit, titled “Los Guloyas de San Pedro de Macorís” is made up of 18 paintings in various formats made using mixed techniques on canvas.

Feliz encouraged those present to support the activities held by the Ministry of Culture in order to better preserve the essence and cultural traditions of Dominican peoples.

Meanwhile, in Reyes Moore’s address, special emphasis was placed on the promotion of Los Guloyas’ Cocolo Dance Drama, which was proclaimed in 2005 as a piece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Moore also recounted the 2001 proclamation of the ‘Cultural Space of the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit of the Congos of Villa Mella’ as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity to remind attendees about some of the international recognition which Dominican culture has gained.

To finish, he announced that DINAFOLK is currently making preparations for the National Day of Merengue, and will make announcements of the day’s planned activities shortly.

The (performing) artistic portion of the day’s events was carried out by singer-songwriter Félix Ramírez Sepúlveda, who performed the song “Por San Pedro de Macorís” and a song to commemorate Dominican National Poet Pedro Mir.

In his address, Campusano stated that it took him a number of months to conceptualize and render the works, which have the main goal of preserving Cocolo dance, which is very popular around Christmas, Carnival, and during the San Pedro festival in June.

The type of dance was brought to the Dominican Republic by anglophone immigrants from other Caribbean islands that arrived in the Dominican Republic around the middle of the 19th Century.

In one of the paintings, former group leader Daniel Henderson, also known as Linda, who passed away in 2009, is depicted. A number of other scenes which represent the dances and rituals made famous by the Cocolo Dance Drama group are also part of the exhibit. For those interested in taking a piece of cultural patrimony home, the paintings are also up for sale.

After all was said and done, everyone enjoyed a special toast of Guavaberry, a typical alcoholic drink of Afro-Caribbean origins which can be found in San Pedro de Macorís.
