TWO Dominican Groups to Participate in Mompox Jazz Festival 2017
    Santo Domingo, September 11th, 2017

Dominican jazz ensembles 4inTune and Pengbian Sang and Retro Jazz have been invited to participate in the 2017 Mompox Jazz Festival during concerts held on September 22nd and 23rd.

Mompox Jazz Festivalis coordinated by the Gobernación de Bolívar, which has been working hard to make this year’s festival the best yet. During the three days of the festival, activities will be held in plazas, churches, and city streets. Meanwhile, folk groups will play, jazz graffiti will be showcased, and educational activities concerning the genre will be carried out. A combination of jazz, city architecture, people, customs and traditions, invitees, artists, and the Magdalena River will be brought together to offer the public a first class audiovisual experience. Some of the participants of this sixth edition of the festival will be: Cecily’s Band (United States), Pedrito Martinez (Cuba), as well as ensembles from Panama, Venezuela, and Colombia. The slogan of this year’s festival is “An open door to the rhythm of the filigree.”

4inTune: musical ensemble consisting of vocals from Marjorie Jiménez, piano and vocals from Álvaro Dinzey, saxophone from Gelson Sheppard, and Joel Ramirez on percussion. These friends have combined their talents, skills, and musical tastes to create an uncommon group and breathe new life, colors, and adaptations into many of the standards of jazz, blues, bossa nova, pop, soul, R&B, and Latin music that have had major impact and significance in the history of popular music.

Marjorie Jiménez of 4inTune states: “When we began to get together in our homes to talk about a musical project and look for a repertoire, we planned to create a type of music which represented us. It’s normal to feel that you want to do something of your own and be proud of it. But our most proud moment until now has been without a doubt participating in the Mompox Jazz Festival, in Colombia. Initially, we couldn’t believe how happy we were! It’s a great honor to be able to play in your own country, and certainly an added responsibility when you have the opportunity to bring your musical stylings to another. We are very happy, honored, and thankful for this great opportunity! We are counting the days with great excitement until we are able to share our music with a crowd of jazz-lovers in our beautiful neighboring country of Colombia. We will be sure to bring all of our Caribbean happiness and heat, which we have a lot of at the moment!”

The Gobernación de Bolívar and the Instituto de Cultura y Turismo de Bolívar (ICULTUR) requested the participation of Pengbian Sang and Retro Jazz for the second year, due to popular demand after their stellar performance in the 2016 Mompox Jazz Festival! Made of up tenured musicians and counting on the vocal stylings of Nairoby Duarte, Pengbian Sang and Retro Jazz leave their mark on a repertoire formed exclusively from Dominican songs that used to be popular merengues, romantic boleros, passionate salsas, and melancholic bachatas. The songs are recreated in such a way that, although rhythmically and harmonically different from the original versions, they maintain the richness of their melodies and the beauty of their lyrics.

Pengbian remarked: “This will be our third performance in this beautiful country, and second consecutive performance at Mompox. We are extremely enthusiastic and proud to represent the Dominican Republic once again in Colombia. I believe that jazz is living an important moment in our country. Just a few weeks ago Miguel A. Tejada performed in a number of international festivals along with his ensemble. There’s no precedent for this!”

The members of Retro Jazz are: Nairoby Duarte (vocals), Federico Méndez (guitar), Edgar Molina (percussion), Jesús Abréu (saxophone), Álvaro Dinzey (piano and vocals), Guy Frómeta (drums), and Pengbian Sang (bass and musical direction).
