Four Dominican Artists Present in Ministry of Culture Headquarters
    Santo Domingo, July 19th 2017

Renowned Dominican artists Elsa Núñez, José Perdomo, Lizett Mejía and Barón Arias will host an exposition in the Sala Ramón Oviedo at the Ministry of Culture. The exhibit, titled “Convergencia Cromática” (Chromatic Convergence), includes twenty works made using mixed techniques, reflecting the creativity, talent, and ability of these four important figures to Dominican plastic arts.

The opening ceremony for the exhibit will be held on Tuesday, July 26th. Coordinated by the Vice Ministry of Creativity and Public Engagement, the exposition will remain open until Friday, August 18th.

Hilario Olivo, curator of “Convergencia Cromática,” stated that the exhibit is just one part of a cycle of expositions and conferences on visual arts which the Ministry will be holding throughout the rest of 2017.

Referring to “Convergencia Cromática,” noted art critic Laura Gil Fiallo expressed that “the incombustibility of the paintings is the first thing which jumps out in the exposition by Elsa Núñez, Lizett Mejía, Barón Arias and José Perdomo. No matter the context: whether at a biennial, individual showing, group exhibition, assembly or publication, the art of color and light in two dimensions is never outshone. Indeed, it retains its place despite a chorus of pessimistic voices, despite developments in conceptual, object, and action art, despite photography and video.

Fiallo added that “the four artists in question are characterized by wading into abstract waters – on the borders of imagination. And this is a notable thing, because with Dominican art, art is mostly figurative.”

    About the Artists

Elsa Núñez was born in Santo Domingo. She studied philosophy in the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo and art in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Arts. She did post-graduate studies in the Academia de San Fernando and the Círculo de Bellas artes in Madrid, Spain. She was awarded a scholarship along with her husband Ángel Haché to visit Spain and France on a trip for cultural leaders. She was director of the Casa de Teatro’s Sala Paúl Guidicelli and president of the Colegio Dominicano de Artes Plásticos (CODAP). Núñez’s works have been displayed individually 48 times and hundreds of times in groups – in important galleries and museums around the world such as Spain’s Instituto de Cultura Hispánica, Spain’s Colegio Mayor Guadalupe, and in Paris.

Barón Arias was born in Santo Domingo. He is a graduate of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, where he studied plastic arts. During his studies he was awarded various prizes for drawings and sculpture. In the 9th León Jiménez Art Competition, celebrated in Santiago de los Caballeros, he took second place in drawing. Arias has participated in individual and collective expositions such as: “Expresiones Divergentes” (Divergent Expressions) in the Centro Cultural de las Telecomunicaciones; “Pintores Dominicanos” (Dominican Painters) in Panama; “Gráfica Actual de Santo Domingo” (Modern Artwork of Santo Domingo) in the Museo de Arte Moderno; “Intercambio Cultural Dominico-puertorriqueño” (Dominican-Puerto Rican Cultural Exchange) in San Juan; “Artistas de la República Dominicana” (The Dominican Republic’s Artists) in the Sheraton Hotel; and “Arte Actual Iberoamericano” (Modern Ibero-American Art) in Madrid, among others.

Lizett Mejía was born in Santo Domingo. She studied plastic arts in Santo Domingo’s Escuela Nacional de Artes Visuales (ENAV) and architecture in the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. She studied children’s art techniques under Rosa Pichardo of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. Along with professor Michel Gravot, she taught a course on new techniques in contemporary art to school children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Mejía has received important awards and has participated in numerous national collective expositions in Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, France, and Argentina.

José Perdomo did his studies in the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. He later studied at the Pratt Institute of Graphic Design, and later under Luis Cannitzer in New York. He obtained his Master’s in Painting in the Arts Students League of New York under direction from Robert Motherwell. Perdomo has participated in collective expositions along with prestigious artists, and has seen his work highlighted in exhibitions and biennials of great importance, such as: the 12th International Painting Festival; in Cagnes-Sur-Mer; in Paris’s Musée du Luxembourg; the 2nd Biennial of Cuenca, Ecuador; the International Festival in Frankfurt, Germany; the International Art Festival in Brussels; and in the 2nd Biennial of the Carribbean in Santo Domingo, among others.
