    Américo Mejía to Hold a Conference on Merengue during Cultural Week in Miami.
    Fundación Sabores Dominicanos en el Taste Santo Domingo 2017

    FSD Presents National Journalism and Literature Awards
    Santo Domingo, June 14, 2017

    The Sabores Dominicanos Foundation (FSD) presented trophies, certificates and cash prizes to the winners of the 2016 National Journalism and Literature Awards, during a ceremony held in the Sala Aída Cartagena Portalatín at the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library.

    This FSD initiative was done jointly with the Ministry of Culture to recognize the importance of literature and journalism.  

    Leading the ceremony was president of FSD, Bolívar Troncoso Morales; in representation of the Ministry of Tourism, Esperanza Lithgow; Carlos Santos, representative from the Ministry of Culture; writer Tony Raful and journalist Ramón Colombo, president and member of the jury, respectively; director of the National Library, Diomedes Núñez and creator of the awards, Elaine Hernández Pión.

    The winners of first, second and third places received a cash prize of 75,000, 50,000 and 30,000 pesos respectively, as well as trophies and certifications.
    Please note that the Novel category, which had a prize of RD 100,000.00 pesos, a trophy and certificate was declared empty.  

    Simón Romero Gastronomic Journalism Award

    This award was created to promote the spread of Dominican gastronomy, and to recognize the work of journalists on the subject of Dominican culinary heritage.

    The awards in this category went to Yaniris Michel, from the  Revista Pandora of the El Caribe newspaper, who won first place for their work El boom de la comida criolla; Teresa Guerrero, from Ciguapa.net, who got second place for Gastronomía dominicana: un atractivo turístico creciente  and  Lenny Marzán, who received third place with the report La gastronomía como oferta turística en República Dominicana, published on  acercateard.com

    In addition to the prize-winners, the award honors the career of Simón Romero, a dedicated supporter of tourism and Dominican cooking and a renowned culinary journalist.

    Julio Vega Batlle Gastronomic Literature Awards

    This award intends to encourage the spread of Dominican food and the work of researchers and writers that have given special attention to that topic.

    In the stories category, those receiving awards were Rafael García Romero, winner of first place with Una Cena exquisita; Bolívar Mejía, second place winner for Chocolate caliente; and Bismar Galán, in third place with El rito de un plato.

    Several writers received honorable mentions in the story category: Daniela Cruz Gil, author of Añejo para tres; Karen de Santana, who participated with Dinorah and Anthony Alexander Henríquez with Un glosario redentor.

    In the essay category those receiving awards were Bismar Galán, first place winner with La mesa está servida: una mirada a la cultura gastronómica dominicana; Petra Rondón, who recieved second place for Relación sumaria de la gastronomía dominicana: 50 alimentos que reflejan nuestra identidad, and Miguelina Durán, in third place with the essay Estrategia para el desarrollo sostenible del turismo gastronómico de la ruta serrana: Jarabacoa, Constanza y San José de Ocoa, retos y desafíos.

    This award also honors the career of the Dominican writer Julio Vega Batlle, the author of Anadel, the first novel about Dominican gastronomy and only of its kind.

    The award-winner were selected by a jury led by Tony Raful  and comprised of Mario Rivadulla, Ramón Colombo, Elsa Peña Nadal, Valentín Amaro, Nan Chevalier, José del Castillo Pichardo, Basilio Belliard and José Guerrero.
