The General Directorate of Film (DGCINE, for its acronym in Spanish), in collaboration with the Vice President’s Office of the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX, for its acronym in Spanish), the Ministry of Culture, and the Center of Export and Investment of the Dominican Republic (CEI-RD, for its acronym in Spanish), successfully held the Dominican Republic’s 1st National Film Congress, which took place March 23 and 24, 2017, in the Convention Center of MIREX.

This event was held with the support of the following groups and organizations: Lantica Media, Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano, Panamericana Films, Estudio Quitasueño, Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios, Cinemateca Dominicana, Caribbean Cinemas, Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales (EGEDA Dominicana), Festival de Cine Global Dominicano (FCGD), Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Asociación Dominicana de Profesionales de la Industria del Cine (ADOCINE), Asociación de Escritores y Guionistas de la República Dominicana (AEGRD), BKT Financial Advisory, Asociación Dominicana de Actores de Cine (ADAC), Transekur Movie & Event Production Vehicles, La Casita de Producciones, Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), La Escuela de Diseño Altos de Chavón, Asociación de Mujeres del Cine (AMUCINE) and Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM).

The meeting entailed many presentations including five panels, three chats, one thematic session and one round table discussion. It was a meeting open to the public, free of cost and aimed toward university students, members of the industry, and businesses and society in general.

During the first day of the meeting two important activities took place: the Intersectoral Council for the Promotion of Film Activity (CIPAC, for its acronym in Spanish), carried out by the 3rd Annual Breakfast of the General Directorate of Film, and the presentation of the pre-nominated Dominicans to the 2017 Platinum Awards.

In the General Directorate of Film’s 3rd Annual Breakfast, which included the presence of investors and members of the industry, General Director of DGCINE, Yvette Marichal expressed that “we hope the organizations at this Congress contribute ideas and help our film and audiovisual industries strengthen and diversify in an environment becoming more and more defiant.” Yanillys Pérez, film director, presented her Project “Candy Town”; Natalia Cabral, film director, presented her Project, “Miriam Miente,” winner of the Fondo para la Promoción Cinematográfica (FONPROCINE); Andrés Farías, presented his project “Candela”; and, Laura Amelia Guzmán and Israel Cárdenas, film directors, showed their project “Reinado de Belleza.”
