Jazz Will Inundate Calle Pedro Clisante in Sosúa Every Friday in October.
    Sosúa, Cabarete, August 30, 2016

During the month of October, jazz will flood the street of Pedro Clisante in Sosúa with weekly shows, as a way to promote and further develop the tourist area as a stage for music and art.

The aim of these shows, which will take place each week on Friday, is to promote the XX edition of the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, which takes place from November 8 to 12 in Santo Domingo, at Centro León Center in Santiago, Puerto Plata and Cabarete.

Maria Elena Gratereaux, director of the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, explained that these activities are part of the warming up to the annual musical event and will conclude with the opening of a graphic exhibition at Casa de Arte de Sosúa, on November 3.

Gratereaux explained that the DR Jazz Festival 2016organizers chose Sosúa to promote gender equality and the eradication of violence against women with these specific activities.

She said the presentations will be on Friday October 14, 21 and 28 and on Friday, November 3, in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition at Casa de Arte de Sosúa where the history and graphic identity that has characterized the festival during these twenty years will be showcased.

The artist Adolfo Faringthon, who has been responsible for the visual art of the festival for sixteen years, has begun working on the stage of research and curatorial project, he said.

"In this exhibition we intend to present the complete collection of shirts of the twenty years of the Festival, the identification cards, iconic photographs, scenographic sections of some years, the complete collection of all the posters, original works autographed by artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Dave Valentin and Giovanni Hidalgo, among others, as well as an audiovisual of about 7 minutes." Gratereaux said.

The exhibition will be presented at the Exhibition Hall of the French Embassy in Santo Domingo in September, in Casa de Cultura of Puerto Plata in October, culminating in the Casa de Arte de Sosúa from November 2016 to January 2017.

"We want to emphasize the activities in Sosúa to present to this city as one of the most complete destinations in the country, where in addition to its beautiful beaches and water sports, there are thriving luxury hotels, a lot of artists, a great Art House with free programs in various areas of art, excellent craftsmen, a wide variety of restaurants, the magic of Cabarete, and the most hospitable and cheerful people," said the director of the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, noting that this would not be possible without the incredible support received from the Ministry of Tourism.

She recalled that this edition of DR XX Jazz Festival is dedicated to women and that activities in Sosúa seek to show the public that there flourishes music and art.

She said that during the festival there will be concerts, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and jam sessions.
She also said that this year, for the first time, the Festival will have a night in Santo Domingo, after performing there in November 2015, a warm-up concert, with the collaboration of the Music Conservatory of Santo Domingo. (www.drjazzfestival.com).

The DR Jazz Festival, sponsored by the Ministry of Tourism, is a free annual event, internationally renowned, introducing the Jazz genre to a national audience and international music lovers.

The Festival also provides music education to the region through FEDUJAZZ, the organizing foundation of the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival. This non-profit organization creates musical programs for low-income children, motivating and developing their artistic talents. FEDUJAZZ is currently conducting music education programs helping the future of these children, using music as a tool for social change. FEDUJAZZ signed a collaboration agreement with Berkley College of Music recently by which graduate students of the prestigious university will be integrated to give classes from September to December 2016 at the foundation in Cabarete.
