The Queen of Merengue Dazzles the New York Audience in the Second Dominican Get Together of 2016
    New York, April 22, 2016

The latest production by Cuban director Rigoberto Lopez, titled "Vuelos Prohibidos," was recently released in the framework of the Dominican Global Film Festival 2015. The US premiere of the film will take place on Monday, April 25, at the Lincoln Center in New York, at the Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater @ Film Society, as part of the cooperation between Funglode and the Spanish Broadcasting System, Inc. (SBS) (NASDAQ: SBSA). GFDD and Funglode president, Dr. Leonel Fernández, the main actors and a number of special guests will attend a high-profile red carpet event.

During the film premiere, a co-production agreement will be signed with ICAIC, which will seal the partnership that Funglode has been fostering with them for many years. The film will also be screened in Miami and in Los Angeles. In the coming weeks, it will be screened at North American movie theaters by Augustín Presenta.

"Vuelos Prohibidos" tells the love story of Mario and Monique, who meet when an unexpected storm triggers the cancellation of their flights from Paris to Cuba, a fact that led them to become lovers in a hotel located next to the airport. There, between confessions and feelings, they try to share their visions of Cuba while drifting between outbursts of truths, frustrations, doubts and hopes.

According to the film director, the story, which began to be written in 2007, makes every effort to show the contrasts of the country, from Vedado’s and Miramar’s modernity to "the other Havana." Although the entire plot takes place in Paris, the film shows images of the Caribbean island, which is currently in the international spotlight ahead of its trade opening.

Cuban singer Paulo Fernández Gallo, better known as Paulito FG, performs in the leading role, which is a two-fold first for him given that "Vuelos Prohibidos" is also his feature film debut. Moroccan-born French actress Sanâa Alaoui plays Monique, who is trying to travel to Havana to meet a Cuban father she has never seen.

Daysi Granados, Mario Balmaseda and Manuel Porto make up the rest of the film’s cast, whose purpose is to provide a story that "wants to be honest in its dialogue with our reality," according to the Cuban director.

Wendy Guerra and Rigoberto López came up with the original idea of the project, while the script was a joint collaboration by the film director with Julio Carranza. Danilo León Alonso and Omar de la Cruz participated in the executive production; Miguel Núñez worked on the music, and Ángel Alderete Gómez is the director of cinematography.

"Vuelos Prohibidos" is a production of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), in collaboration with Cuba’s Ministry of Culture and the Dominican Republic’s Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (Funglode).
