"A WEEK OF PURE JAZZ" to Celebrate the International Jazz Day
    Santo Domingo, March 17, 2016

In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as the International Jazz Day with the aim of highlighting Jazz and its diplomatic role in uniting people from all corners of the world, promoting peace and dialogue between the cultures, diversity and respect for human rights and human dignity, the eradication of discrimination, promoting freedom of expression, fostering gender equality, and strengthening the role of youth in the implementation of social change.

The celebration of the International Jazz Day is led by Irina Bokova, UNESCO’s Director General, in association with legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, UNESCO’s Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and president of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Each year, a city is chosen as the world’s headquarters for this event and, on this occasion, the city of Washington, D.C. has selected to fulfill that role. A series of Jazz performances, community service initiatives and educational programs will take place in schools, libraries, hospitals, community centers and arts centers throughout the city to mark the event.

On the night of April 30, Washington, D.C., will be the venue for the All-Star Global Concert, which will feature performances by dozens of internationally renowned Jazz stars. This concert will be broadcast live worldwide through the web sites of UNESCO, the United States Department of State and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

The Dominican Republic has been celebrating this great festival since 2012, and this year it will join the other 190 countries from all continents in celebrating Jazz by way of thousands of performances and programs. Our country will live "UNA SEMANA DE PURO JAZZ" (A WEEK OF PURE JAZZ) starting on Friday, April 22 and closing on Saturday, April 30, with activities that will take place in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete.

The organizing team is made of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, the Dominican Republic National Commission for UNESCO and Jazz in Dominicana, which have joined forces with the Eduardo León Jimenes Cultural Center, and the National Conservatory of Music, Música Maestro, Los Lunes de Jazz, Fedujazz, Lulú Tasting Bar, Dominican Fiesta Hotel and Sandy Gabriel to celebrate this Jazz festival on a large scale.
