Waddy Jáquez Will Feature his Film “La Barbería’ in New York’s Lincoln Center

Dominican film director Waddy Jáquez, and cast members of “La Barbería,” will participate in a special feature presentation of the film in the U.S.

Santo Domingo, July 17, 2018 – Film director Waddy Jáquez will feature his first film “La Barbería” [The Barber Shop] in Lincoln Center of the city of New York next July 25th.

Key invitees will include former Dominican President and current president of FUNGLODE/GFDD, Dr. Leonel Fernández, as well as Dominican producers Rafael Elías Muñoz and Juan Basanta; director Waddy Jáquez; actor Héctor Aníbal; the director of the General Film Directorate of the D.R., Yvette Marichal; and the director of the Dominican Global Film Festival, Omar de la Cruz.

“La Barbería” tells the story of Benny, who has spent years managing his family’s small barber shop in Washington Heights.  He works with his Uncle Cheo, but the times are changing and money is scarce.

The neighborhood is riddled with closed shops and the barber shop could be the next store to close, although the immigrants in the area consider the place a sanctuary that represents their traditions and culture in that particular block.  After putting the building up for sale, Benny has to face the demands and objections of the surrounding Dominican community.

The film is directed by Waddy Jáquezm, and produced by Rafael Elías Muñoz and Juan Basanta.  Cast members include Héctor Aníbal, Rossmery Almonte (Boquita), Georgina Duluc, Modesto Lacén, Miguel Bucarelly, Sandy Hernández, Iván Camilo, Adalgisa Pantaleón, Hony Estrella, Vicente Santos, Josué Guerrero and Freddy Beras-Goico.

“I was overwhelmed, right from  the moment I received the news.  To see my first film featured in a special presentation, and in Lincoln Center, is a critical challenge  for me.  I am thrilled with the news, even though I am currently grief-stricken  over the loss of my dear sister Daunia. I dedicate this event to you, my friend and engine behind my career,” explained Waddy Jáquez.

The film showing is organized by the Dominican Global Film Festival (FCGD) – an initiative of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE) and the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) – jointly with the Palacio del Cine, the General Film Directorate (DGCINE), Lantica Media, Radio Cadena Comercial, SBS and Duende Film.

The event is part of the Dominican Film Festival program, headed by Armando Guareño.
