Resources for Assistance Against Gender-Based Violence in the Dominican Republic

The Ministry of Women in the Dominican Republic offers assistance and legal support to victims of physical, psychological and marital violence through its lawyers throughout the country. Also, the Ministry has a telephone assistance system for the reporting of cases of violence.

Additionally, through its 52 provincial and municipal offices (OMM and OPM, for their acronyms in Spanish), the Ministry of Women is responsible for managing, through the relevant institutions, specialized care in domestic violence cases.

In turn, the Prosecutor of the National District has several specialized programs to combat gender-based violence:

• Unit of Gender-Based Persecution and Prevention: is composed of the Unit of Gender-Based and Domestic Violence Persecution and Prevention of the National District, the only place in the Dominican capital where cases of sexual crimes are investigated.

• Care Center for Survivors of Violence: is a space for integral care that includes emotional and financial recuperation as well as social and professional development of women.This care center for gender-based violence maintains the following programs:

1. Phycological service program
2. Mutual help program
3. Body-mind therapy program
4. Social services program
5. Training program
6. Program for service providers

• Behavioral Intervention Center for Men: offers therapeutic and psychoeducational care to men in the framework of violations of law  24 – 97 about gender-based violence.
•  Department of Childhood, Adolescence and the Family: deals with cases of physical, phycological, verbal negligent violence, or any other violation of a child or adolescent’s rights. Likewise, it is responsible for conflicts that may arise between members of a family that produce physical, psychological or verbal aggressions, threats or damage to personal property.
