Office of the Vice President Promotes the Protection of the Environment with the Contest “Literary Bottles”

Santiago, May 15, 2019 – Vice President Dr. Margarita Cedeño visited the exhibit “Read, Recycle and Create” where the winning pieces of the National Literary Bottles 2019, at the Center of Convention and Dominican Culture of the Technological University of Santiago (UTESA). During her visit she valued the talent, creativity and commitment of the participating students with the environment.

Dr. Cedeño visited the exhibited along with Melany de Jesús Rodríguez, Director of the Cultural Center; Ingrid González de Rodríguez, Under-Director of the Dominican newspaper La Información; Dulce Elvira de los Santos, Director of the Children and Youth Library of the Dominican Republic (BIJRD), and students from various schools from Santiago, the country’s second largest city.

During her visit, Vice President Cedeño highlighted that the National Literary Bottles Contest is an initiative that allows youth to use their imagination and raise awareness on the importance of taking care of the environment by turning discarded articles into works of art.

“This year some three thousand students from Santiago participated in the contest by creating quality works of art. But the most important dynamic of this Literary Bottles initiative is to teach the children the possibility to create, innovate and exercise their imagination by creating works of arts that are inspired by literary works,” explained Vice President Cedeño.

The participating students belong to local public and private schools in Santiago. Six schools were awarded special awards who created pieces of art based on recycled materials and based on the literary works of Dominican writer and poet Virgilio Díaz Grullón.

Winners

The first place award was issued to the local school “Doctor Miguel Canela Lázaro” for its sense of innovation and creation. They based their work on the short story “El Reloj” (The Clock). The private school “Colegio Padre Julio Chevalier” won the second place award with their interpretation of the short story “El Enemigo” (The Enemy). The third place award was for the short story “El Pozo sin Fondo,” (The Bottomless Well),” presented by the “Liceo Secundario Juncalito Abajo.”

The winning works of art will be exhibited during the entire week at the Center.
