The Dominican Republic Invited to the 44th Annual Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival

Santo Domingo, May 14, 2018 – The 44th annual Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival, to be held November 16-25 this year, will feature the Dominican Republic as a guest nation as a recognition to the country’s emerging film industry.  In the last few years the country’s film industry has shown shown tremendous potential.

The announcement was made after the agreement signed between Manuel H. Martin, director of the Huelva Festival and Yvette Marichal, general director of the country’s General Directorate of Cinema (DGCINE).

In this year’s edition, the Huelva Festival will highlight and distinguish the Dominican movie industry.

Martin explained that the Ibero-American Film Festival, faithful to its continuous support of the film industry on the other side of the Atlantic, will feature in this year’s Festival a “young and vibrant” film industry that, since 2011, has experienced a notable evolution thanks to the approval of Law 108-10 to Encourage the Cinematographic Activity in the Dominican  Republic, and which has encouraged the production of a good number of films.  Because of this incentive law, the country has gone from producing one or two films a year to more than 20 in the last few years.

Because of these developments, the Huelva Festival Festival will “show its support and solidarity” to the Dominican film industry and to the creators of an “interesting and emerging production industry, as was featured in our Official Section last year,” revealed Martin.

“The commitment of our team with the Ibero-American film industry is fundamental because our festival, as was recognized a few months ago with the nomination to the Iberian Festival Awards, continues to set an example for the promotion of the films that are produced on this side and on the other side of the Atlantic,” explained Martin.

At the same time, Yvette Marichal thanked the Huelva Festival for taking the Dominican  Republic into consideration as a guest of honor during the upcoming 44th annual event.  In her opinion, the Huelva event “is an inescapable reference for those of us who are dedicated to the film industry in Ibero-America.”

“This distinction will encourage us even more to continue on the road we’ve embarked on during the  last few years, and will contribute to make much more visible our film industry in the world that, without a doubt, will come out ahead in promotion and projection,” stated Marichal.
