Nobel Prize Winner Derek Walcott To Participate in the Book Fair

The 1992 Nobel Prize-winning Poet, Derek Walcott of the Caribbean island of Santa Lucia, will be at the Culture Hall of the National Theater next Wednesday April 30 at 8:00 p.m. where he will participate in the activities of the 11th International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2008.


Walcott’s books are known to express many of the sentiments and human nature of the Caribbean people


Mr. Walcott’s participation in the cultural event forms part of the special programming dedicated to the Association of Caribbean States (AEC), the Guest of Honor of this year’s Book Fair.

Author of numerous books that have been translated into many languages, Walcott’s literary success is an honor to the entire Caribbean region in that his education and literary training all took place in the region. A professor of literature, Walcott received his degree at the University of West Indies, headquartered in Kingston, Jamaica. In Trinidad and Tobago, he founded the Trinidad Theater workshop which produced his first plays.

Walcott’s books are known to express many of the sentiments and human nature of the Caribbean people whose culture is a mixture of African, English and Dutch traditions. These are recurring themes in his poetry and plays.

Among his most famous works are “The Star Apple Kingdom,” “Ocean Grapes,” “Another Life,” “Arkansas Testament,” “Winter,” and “Dream of the Winter Monkey.”
