Santo Domingo Hosts ECLAC Meeting The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will begin its 32nd Ministerial Meeting this coming Tuesday in Santo Domingo where it will discuss strategic themes for development in the region. The meeting, in which representatives from 50 countries will participate, is being called “Productive Transformation 20 Years Later. Old Problems and New Opportunities.” Temístocles Montás, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development, said President Leonel Fernández and ECLAC Secretary General, José Luis Machinea will be present at the opening event. Montás, speaking from the National Palace, said that on Monday a book will be published “The Dominican Republic 2030. Toward a Cohesive Nation.” The book will outline the government’s development strategy that must be agreed upon by the rest of the country’s legal entities, political parties and civil organizations before it can be submitted to Congress. The meeting, in which representatives from 50 countries will participate, is being called “Productive Transformation 20 Years Later. Old Problems and New Opportunities.” The discussion will serve to propose a regional development strategy over the long and short term based on productive diversification, innovation and alliances between the public and private sector, explained the Minister. Montás also said that Tuesday June 10 and Wednesday June 11 special sessions will be held to analyze the ECLAC document, including a high level seminar which will include the participation of government authorities from various member countries. Throughout the day Wednesday and Thursday June 12th, there will be a regional preparatory meeting for the international follow-up conference on the financing of the application of the Monterrey Consensus, added Montás.
