Government Foresees a $700 Million Investment in Mining Industry

On Wednesday, Dominican President Leonel Fernández met with major investors of the Barrick Gold Company, the biggest mining company in the world. The meeting, in the National Palace, was held to discuss the development of the Pueblo Viejo gold mine.


Hans Hertell said upon leaving the meeting that the project could mean an investment of $700 million dollars which would obviously give a boost to the DR’s economy.


Former US Ambassador to the DR, Hans Hertell who served as translator for the investors, said upon leaving the meeting that the project could mean an investment of $700 million dollars which would obviously give a boost to the DR’s economy. Hertell pointed out that it would be the biggest investment ever made in the history of the Dominican Republic, according to the President’s Office of Information, Press and Publicity.

Investors were introduced at the President’s office by Minister of Industry and Commerce, Melanio Paredes. The group was comprised of Brian Mulroney, Vernon Jordan, Peter Punk, William Cohen, Kelvin Dushinsky, Bill Birchall and Angus Monaughton. Other attendants included Gustavo Cisneros, Kar Otto Pohe, Andronico Luksic, Vince Borg and Hans Hertell.
