The Dominican Republic will participate in a regional Food Security Program in Managua, Nicaragua this coming May 7. Participants at the summit will discuss regional strategies on improving production and distribution of food in the face of world wide price increases of basic food commodities.

The announcement was made by Dominican and Nicaragua Foreign Ministers, Carlos Morales Troncoso and Samuel Santos respectively, at a press conference held in the National Palace. Prior to the summit, which aims to bring together presidents and heads of state from Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Venezuela, the Ministers of Agriculture from these nations will hold preparatory meetings in advance of this important event.

Morales Troncoso said the Summit on Food Security will seek solutions to the growing lack of the basic food staples while discussing how to optimize domestic food production and encouraging each of the participating countries to deepen their efforts to become self sufficient in terms of their food needs, according to a press release from the President’s office.

The Foreign Minister pointed out that neighboring Haiti has also been invited to the meeting, reiterating the Dominican government’s solidarity in the face of the difficult situation confronting that country.

He also said the Dominican government will take advantage of the visit to Nicaragua to restart the tourism cooperation agreement, placing emphasis on the transference of experience.

Morales Troncoso said that as part of the official visit of his Nicaraguan counterpart, they also dealt with topics of mutual interest such as the situation in Latin America and the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

In the press conference at the Orlando Martínez Hall, the foreign ministers highlighted the excellent bonds of friendship that have united their two peoples. As such, they emphasized the need to stimulate greater levels of cooperation and commercial exchange.
