Air Dominicana Takes Off in May

The new airline company, a state and private joint venture, will first fly to the United States then to several Latin American countries ..
The Dominican airline, Air Dominicana, will begin operations on May 1, according to José Tomás Pérez, director general of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation (IDAC). The new airline company, a state and private joint venture, will first fly to the United States then to several Latin American countries with its three airplanes, according to a press release from the IDAC’s Public Relations Department. “The airline will operate Boeing 723 airplanes capable of carrying up to 125 passengers,” explained Mr. Tomás Pérez who also noted that this new Dominican airline will strengthen the current situation and help to avoid the airline monopoly that has dominated the transport of passengers to and from the country.

With respect to the permanence and placement of this airline in the competitive market overseen by companies with capital from the United States, Tomás Pérez said “this airline has sufficient economic support to compete on the level with North American and Latin American airlines.”

“We are now in the final process of the air traffic communications system which will be the most modern of its kind in all of Latin America. The cost of this system is around $8 million dollars and is being done under an agreement signed by Aerodom and will be paid by passengers in a dollar system that has been created for this purpose.” The equipment is being installed in the Las Americas International Airport,” said the IDAC director.

New Navigation Area Headquarters

Also, in July of this year, Dominican President Leonel Fernández is planning to inaugurate the Navigation Area headquarters, a building being constructed at the Las Americas Airport. It is expected to be some 8,000 square meters in size and will house the technical area of IDAC, air traffic controllers and technicians, explained José Tomás.
