Alfaguar Launches Rey Andujar’s Novel Candela

Alfaguara Publishers announced the release of its first novel this year: Candela by Rey Emmanuel Andújar, his new young adult fiction book. The book presentation will take place at the Casa de Teatro on Wednesday February 6 starting at 7:30 p.m. The author will speak with journalist and writer Rosa Silverio then he will read segments of his novel. Admission is free and open to the public.

In Candela, Lieutenant Imanol Petafunte goes off on the daring mission of uncovering the causes of the violent death of Renato Castratte, who was thrown from a balcony, even though his superiors have ordered him to close the case. His only witness is the prestigious lawyer, Sera Peñablanc, Renato’s secret lover and the future wife of wealthy Luciano L. Maravilla. As a backdrop, the persistent rain falling on Santo Domingo warns of another hurricane. Candela, the prostitute and fortuneteller for whom the book is named, has a premonition about the lieutenant while he is visiting her in the bordello.

In his prose that oscillates between a provocative and a lyrical tone, Rey Andújar tells a dark detective story while also exposing the daily hardships that plague the existence of the city’s inhabitants who are constantly exposed to unforeseen storms that rush in from the Caribbean, say the publishers.

Candela, 148 pages is now available in bookstores in the Dominican Republic for RD$300. The illustration on the cover was taken from “La Matinée” or “Nude with an Umbrella” by the prestigious Puerto Rican painter Francisco Rodón on display in the Art Museum in Ponce.
