A Group of 156 Dominican Students Will Attend University in the United States and Mexico  



As part of the scholarship program of the Secretary of State for Higher Education, Science and Technology, 156 Dominican students will attend universities in the United States and Mexico. 


In a ceremony in the Ambassadors’ Hall of the National Palace, Dominican President Leonel Fernández said goodbye to the high school students and spoke with each of them, wishing them success in their future careers, according to a press release from the Presidential Office of Information, Press and Publicity. The country’s main authorities in the field of education also attended the ceremony.


 

Secretary of State for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ligia Amada Melo, welcomed the students who, she explained, were this year’s recipients of international scholarships to study abroad.

 

Amada Melo said the students were selected because of their high grades and their areas of study, which will benefit the future of the country. She explained that the majority of students chosen have a technology background and are interested in furthering their knowledge in basic areas as well.

 

Ms. Melo urged the students to use their time well and to return home to their country to share and utilize their knowledge.

 

High school graduate, Ramón Ortiz Hernández from Monseñor Nouel province, spoke on behalf of the students, expressing their gratitude. He said the scholarships to study abroad constitute a milestone in their lives. The fact that the government has made these scholarships available, he said, demonstrates that the government has enormous confidence in Dominican students and youth and is confirmation that education is the best road out of poverty toward development and collective well being.
