The Dominican Republic and Spain are co-producing the “Sol y Luna” film, a romantic comedy that deals with the issue of immigration and has been under the spotlight of international media.

Directed by José Enrique “Pinky” Pintor and produced by Ézaro Films, “Sol y Luna” is a Dominican and Spanish co-production in which technicians, artists and other talents from both countries participate. These include Dominican actors such as Frank Perozo and Dalisa Alegría, and Spanish actors such as Manuel Manquina and Nerea Barros, who recently won the 2015 Goya for Best Actress in the “La isla mínima” film.

This collaboration also shows in the various locations where the film was shot, such as Santiago de Compostela, Ferrol, La Coruña, Santo Domingo and Punta Cana.

Since before filming began in October of 2015, the “Sol y Luna” production has occupied an almost permanent place in the Spanish media, by providing details on the locations where it is being filmed and the shared experiences of the filmmakers with artists from other countries, and the complexity of their subject matter.

The plot of the film revolves around Javier (Frank Perozo) a documentary filmmaker who aims to find the reasons why migrants leave everything behind to chase their dreams, but quickly becomes entangled in an charming love story when he is trapped between two girls, Sol (Nerea Barros) in Spain and Luna (Dalisa Alegría) in the Dominican Republic.

The story itself is fun and casual, but its background deals with a serious issue, migration and migrants. Even so, the film does not contain a direct analysis of the migratory phenomenon.

Based on an original idea by Ángel Peláez and a script written by José A. Paxtor, José Pintor and the winner of three Goya awards, Ángel de la Cruz, “Sol y Luna” is a romantic comedy of errors, full of cultural contrasts between Spain and the Dominican Republic.

Pintor, a filmmaker of Galician origin and living in the Caribbean for over 20 years, highlighted the importance of the light and landscapes contained in the film shots, a detail that influenced the process of selecting the locations for filming.

Also, given the wide selection of locations, talent and technical facilities that this production has enjoyed, this film is a clear example of the possibilities that the Dominican Republic offers to foreign productions that choose to shoot in our country.
