LLast Friday, October 30, art critics Marianne de Tolentino, Amable López Meléndez and Abil Peralta Agüero participated in the panel “Tribute to Ramón Oviedo”, organized by the Ministry of Culture in coordination with the Museum of Modern Art (MAM) and the Organizing Committee of the 28th National Biennial of Visual Arts – Santo Domingo 2015.

The event was held in the auditorium of the Museum of Modern Art, where the panelists shared with the public and with Oviedo’s family members their impressions and experiences about the professional and personal life of the great master of fine arts.

Art critic Marianne de Tolentino, Director of the National Gallery of Fine Arts and an expert on the Dominican and Caribbean art, highlighted Maestro Oviedo’s originality, professionalism and the strokes in his self-portraits.

In turn, Abil Peralta Agüero, author of more than a hundred essays and reviews for catalogs, newspapers and national and international magazines, and Cultural Advisor/Coordinator of the Technical Unit of Culture at the House of Representatives of the National Congress, recounted his stories and experiences with Oviedo, revealing a human being with extraordinary training and sensitivity for the arts in its various forms.

The panel concluded with the words of Amable López Meléndez, Chief Curator of the Museum of Modern Art, art critic and, for more than a decade, writer of contemporary art in Areíto, the cultural supplement of the HOY newspaper, who said that Oviedo’s pieces are characterized by their intense reflection on the human condition, the existential contradictions and the complex relationship between artistic practice, socio-cultural space and nature.

Later, the “Bohemian Night”, with artist Pavel Nuñez and his orchestra, took place in the courtyard of the Museum of Modern Art (MAM). The 28th Biennial of Visual Arts will be open to the public daily until November 17, with extended hours from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm, at the Museum of Modern Art of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, located on Ave. Pedro Henríquez Ureña, Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte.
