Moviegoers around the world prepare to join the film libraries and film archives of various countries in celebration of the “World Audiovisual Heritage Day.” The celebration takes place on October 27.

The General Directorate of Film, through its agency, the Dominican Film Library, joins this celebration by organizing the Audiovisual Heritage Week, an activity that will take place between October 27 and November 4.

The Dominican Film Library, as a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF), has reached out to its sister organizations worldwide inviting them to join the various special activities that will be part of this project.

Among the activities included in the Audiovisual Heritage Week are the film series “Treasures of World Cinema.” This series is made of restored early last century films, part of the film archives of FIAF members, such as the Centre National du Cinéma et de L’image Animée (National Center of Film and Animated Image, France); the Film Archive of Catalonia (Spain); the Deutsche Kinemathek (German Film Library); the Film Library of UNAM; the National Film Library of Mexico; and, the Museum of Modern Art of Japan.

The opening ceremony of the program will begin at 6:30 pm on October 27 at the Dominican Film Library with the keynote address called “The importance of Audiovisual Heritage for Humanity,” delivered by Caroline Figueroa, restoration specialist and current Head of the Department of Preservation of Collections of the National Film Archives of Mexico. Figueroa will also offer a “Workshop for Conservation of Film Material Collections,” aimed at Dominican professionals working in related fields. The workshop will take place from October 26 to October 30.

The Audiovisual Heritage Week concludes on Wednesday, November 4, at 11:00 am, with a ceremony in which government officials and personalities of the local film industry will sign a pact for the Preservation of Audiovisual Heritage.

As the official organization designated for the preservation of the audiovisual heritage of the Dominican Republic, the General Directorate of Film continues its work of protecting and sharing the best of the seventh art.
