Culture Ministry Calls for Entries for IV National Short Story Competition
Santo Domingo, Thursday, June 30, 2015

The Ministry of Culture, through its Department of Literary Management, and País Cultural magazine call on all Dominican writers residing in the country or abroad, to participate in the IV National Short Story Competition 2015, which will be dedicated this year to Manuel del Cabral. This contest was created to promote and encourage cultivation of the short story, a narrative genre that has become popular in recent years in Latin America and Spain. Participants can enter as individuals, not collectives.

Each participant must present a book of short stories. Writers with any type of responsibility that in any way links them to the event’s organizers (Minister and Deputy Ministers and Directors of the Literary Management, Book and Reading, Book Fair, the National Editorial and the National System of Literary Workshops) are prohibited from participating in the competition.

All entries will be presented under pseudonyms; the authors’ real names will be recorded in a sealed envelope with their personal data for identification purposes. Submissions may not be published in print or digital media after being entered into the competition until the winner has been chosen.

The Ministry of Culture, through the National Editorial, will publish the winning entry and will give one hundred (100) copies the author. If the texts submitted to the contest are found to have received awards, of any kind, in similar national or international competitions, they will be automatically disqualified from the competition. Submissions must be in Spanish, original and unpublished. The topic, technique and form are free and at the discretion of the author. The maximum length of each short story may not exceed four hundred (400) words and must fit on one page. The entry must contain a minimum of thirty (30) short stories. The original copy of the book of short stories, along with three copies, must be delivered to the Department of Literary Management of the Ministry of Culture, located in Juan Pablo Duarte Culture Plaza between 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Phone 809.221.4141 ext. 534.

The competition officially opened on June 22, 2015 and will close on September 15, 2015. The will be no extensions.

The jury’s decision will be announced in a press conference the first week of December 2015. The prize will be handed out at a solemn, public ceremony to be held the last week of February 2016. There will be only one winner who will receive a cash prize of $50,000 pesos. There will be no honorable mentions.
