Activities to Commemorate the San Antonio Route
Santo Domingo, Jun 16 2015

Musicians and dancers get together to commemorate the San Antonio Route and to share with Dominicans and foreigners alike their knowledge of the diverse variants of the native music that is performed during the rites of popular religions.

The event began last Saturday, June 13, on the day of commemoration of Saint Anthony, in Rancho Campeche, which is located in the community of El Limón Duveaux in San Cristobal. The get-togethers will continue until Monday, June 29, when the Day of Saint John the Baptist is celebrated with the party workshop “Viva la Sarandunga”. There, the Saint John the Baptist Brotherhood from La Vereda (Baní) will demonstrate this ancient rhythm with performances.

These activities take place under the Pasapié project, furthered by the Culture and Development Initiatives Foundation to promote the contents and values transmitted to the current generation through the traditional dances and rhythms.

About the Sarandunga
Considered the most polyrhythmic music of the country, it has been performed for over a hundred years in the Peravia province during the festivities in honor of Saint John the Baptist.

The Sarandunga followers, who are called “sanjuaneros”, also use this music during the commemoration of important events in the community, pledges to the Patron Saint, wakes and the anniversary of the death of a person.

Those interested in being part of this experience may contact Rancho Campeche at 809-221-3152 or by sending an e-mail to ranchocampeche@yahoo.com.
