Sur Futuro Foundation Announces the Second Call for the Water Planting Ecological Award
Santo Domingo, March 26th, 2015

The Sur Futuro Foundation announced the launching nation-wide of the second call for the Water Planting Ecological Award, which recognizes and encourages exemplary actions that contribute to water conservation and the preservation of its quality, as well as its rational use, through reforestation, forest harvesting, sustainable agricultural practices, forest conservation and educational and awareness-raising activities on the efficient management of this resource.

For the 2015 edition, the period for receiving proposals will be from March 23 until June 26 at 5:00 pm. The presentation of the awards, in the various categories, will take place in November.

The three categories of this award honor the memory of Dominicans whose efforts to preserve the local ecosystems and watersheds are examples for all of us. The Arturo Grullón category recognizes reforestation initiatives in the upper watersheds and other natural areas that supply water to specific populations; the Eugenio de Jesús Marcano Fondeur category distinguishes forest conservation initiatives to protect important sources of water supply, with additional consideration for the preservation of native species (native and/or endemic) and the conservation of natural areas; lastly, the Father Louis Quinn category highlights the efficient use of water and the preservation of its quality (pollution controls, practices that contribute to its efficient use, as well as waste reduction, water recycling and educational programs with verifiable results applied in the already mentioned practices).

The award is aimed at individuals, groups, community organizations, non-governmental organizations and private Dominican companies that carry out some of the activities described in the aforementioned award categories. Nine finalists, three for each category, will be chosen. A winner for each of the categories will then be selected from among those finalists. The winners will receive a statuette plus a cash prize of two hundred fifty thousand pesos 00/100 (RD$250,000.00).

For more information, those interested may consult the rules of the award on the website of the Sur Futuro Foundation, Inc.: www.surfuturo.org, or at the nearest office of that non-profit organization, located in Santo Domingo, at Padre Las Casas y Tamayo.

Concern over water shortages in the not too distant future is also part of the agenda of a group of companies and organizations that have forged a partnership with the Sur Futuro Foundation to promote a culture of water in the country, making the celebration of this Water Planting Ecological Award possible.

The partner organizations are: the National Institute of Water and Sewerage (INAP); the Propagas Foundation; Banco Popular Dominicano; BEPENSA Dominicana with its Coca Cola trademark; the National Network of Business Support to Environmental Protection (ECORED); the Punta Cana Energy Consortium (CEPM); the San Pedro de Macoris Electricity Company (CESPM); Banco de Reservas of the Dominican Republic; Listín Diario; Tiendas Corripio; Young & Rubicam Damaris; The Nature Conservancy (TNC); the Japanese Agency for International Cooperation (JICA); the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM); the Water and Sewerage Corporation of Santo Domingo (CAASD) and the National Institute of Water Resources (INDRHI).
