On the occasion of the celebration of the 171 anniversary of the Dominican Independence, the Cultural Heritage Foundation, a unit of the Directorate General of Customs of the Dominican Republic, formally opened an exhibition of some 30 works by Dominican artists at the United Nations Organization (UN) headquarters in New York.


The opening ceremony of the exhibition “Modernity and contemporaneity in Dominican Art: Works from the Directorate General of Customs’ Collection” was chaired by Fernando Fernández, Director General of Customs; Pedro Vergés, Ambassador Plenipotentiary, Head of the Permanent Mission to the Organization of American States (OAS) and President of the Cultural Heritage DGA Foundation; Eduardo Selman, Consul General of the Dominican Republic in New York; and, Francisco Cortorreal, Ambassador to the UN.


This exhibition, which covers the history of Dominican art from the modern to the contemporary, includes artists such as Antonio Guadalupe, Clara Ledesma, Danilo de los Santos, Dario Suro, Domingo Liz, Eugenio Fernández Granell, Fernando Peña Defilló, Fernando Varela, Gilberto Hernández Ortega, Iván Tobar, Jaime Colson, Jorge Pineda and José García Cordero.


Also, José Ramírez Conde, José Rincón Mora, Josep Gausachs, Julio Valdez, Manuel Montilla, Raquel Paiewonsky, Ramón Oviedo, Paul Giudicelli, Radhamés Mejía, Scherezade García, Yoryi Morel and Inés Tolentino.


The traveling exhibition that the Dominican Directorate General of Customs has been promoting beyond its borders conveys the greatest interest in bringing a valuable representation of the Dominican plastic arts to the international community.


“Modernity and contemporaneity in Dominican Art: Works from the Directorate General of Customs’ Collection” began at the AMA | the Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States, as an initiative of the Cultural Heritage DGA Foundation and the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the OAS.
