Culture Announces the Winning Troupes of the National Carnival Parade 2015

The Ministry of Culture (MINC) announced the winners of the National Carnival Parade 2015, highlighting first of all a troupe called “Imperio de los cuatro elementos” (Empire of the four elements) from the National District, winner of the Grand Prize.


The winners were selected by a team of judges headed by the Minister of Culture, singer and songwriter José Antonio Rodríguez, who was accompanied by cultural manager Ramón Lachapelle, Director General of Cultural Management and Carnival.


During the selection process, the following categories were taken into consideration: Popular Creativity, Historical, Individual Character, Alí-Babá, Traditional, Robalagallina, Fantasy, Mask, and Diablos Cojuelos (Limping Devils).


Over 300 troupes and floats representing the various regions of the country participated in the parade, which took place this past March 1st, including the participation of 98 children’s proposals. The following troupes were selected in the Individual Character category: “Reina de las cayenas” (Queen of the cayenas), from Puerto Plata, in first place; “Yo soy lo que ves” (I am what you see), from Santo Domingo Norte, in second place; and, “Duarte”, from Santo Domingo Este, in third place.


In the Fantasy category, the following were selected: “La Robalagallina de Baní”, in first place; “Dinastía Oriental” (Oriental Dynasty), from Santo Domingo Este, in second place; and, “Invasión Romana, la sublimación de los gladiadores” (Roman Invasion, gladiator’s sublimation), from the National District, in third place.


In the Alí-Babá category: “Mi país es una mina” (My country is a mine), from the National District, won first place; “Hechizo Africano (Fantasía Taína)” (African Spell (Taíno Fantasy)), from Santo Domingo Este, won second place; and “Fusión Guloya” (Guloya Fusion), from the National District, won third place.


In the Historical category: “Los demonios del jefe” (The boss’s demons), from San Juan de la Maguana, won first place; “Somos dominicanos” (We are Dominican), from Santiago de los Caballeros, was selected in second place; and, “África en carnaval” (Africa in Carnival), from the National District, won third place.


In the Devils category: “Revelación carnavalesca, Gran comparsa de Villa Juana” (Carnival revelation, Great troupe from Villa Juana), from the National District, won first place; “Los silver – los diablos de plata” (The silver -the silver devils), from La Vega, won second place; and, “Tribu Yucahu” (Yucahu Tribe), from Puerto Plata, won third place.


In the Popular Creativity category: “Iluminando nuestra identidad” (Lighting up our identity), from Puerto Plata, won first place; “Los gladiadores del diablo” (The devil’s gladiators), from San Juan de la Maguana, won second place; and, “Mitos hawaianos en fiesta de carnaval” (Hawaiian Myths in carnival), from Monseñor Nouel, won third place.
