Magic Inspection with Costa and Mundi Tours
Romana, January 12, 2015

Carolyn Corrigan, Business Development Manager of Costa Cruises for the Dominican Republic market, is visiting the country. Along with Anita Armenteros and Angela Hooper Armenteros of Mundi Tours, Corrigan will visit one of the cruise ships of her company, which is currently in La Roma.

The Costa Magica cruise ship is the one that hosted the group of travel agents and journalists from various media outlets, who were invited to live the magic of each of the areas that make up the ship and to appreciate the comfort and elegance of the ship, which every Monday leaves from the La Romana port, until April 6 of this year. A delicious lunch was served to the guests. The Costa Magica cruise ship has 1,358 cabins, 464 of which have private balconies; there are 4 restaurants and 11 bars, including a cigar and cognac bar; a 1,300 square meter wellness center, with gym, spa and a steam room; 4 pools, including one with a retractable roof; 5 jacuzzis; sports courts; an outdoors jogging trail; a three-story theater; a night club; an internet center; a shopping center; a children’s area (Squok Club) and a children’s pool; a casino; a waterslide; a library; a virtual world, and 5,500 works of art.

Costa Cruises, whose main offices are in Genoa, Italy, has maintained a close relationship with executives of the Mundi Tours travel agency since 1987. The latter express their appreciation for the trust that has been placed in them, and by Corrigan’s presence in the country.

Armenteros and Hooper report that this cruise line offers a variety of destinations, virtually all over the world. They include Europe, Asia, the United Arab Emirates, the Caribbean, the United States, South America and Africa. It is the first cruise line company to offer vacation passenger services; it began operations in 1948. Prior to this business, the Costa family had a business transporting olive oil by cargo ships.

On March 31st, 1948, the first passenger ship of the Costa fleet – the “Anna C” – left Genoa, thus becoming the first ship to cross the South Atlantic after the war, and the first to offer air conditioning in their passenger cabins. The ship arrived in Buenos Aires 16 days after its departure. Among the first trips of the cruise line are those over the Mediterranean, in the “C Andrea” in 1952 and the “Anna C” in 1953.

During the 80s the idea of a ship as a floating hotel became even more accepted. The ships became tourist resorts, the division between classes disappeared completely, the staterooms tended to become more uniform and the entertainment venues multiplied: bars, theaters, casino, nightclub. Everything was available to everyone. Building on these foundations, Costa Armatori was ready for the big leap in quality, represented by the founding of Costa Crociere in 1986.

Costa Cruises is the No. 1 cruise line in Europe, marking the difference with its onboard atmosphere, which is always cheerful and lively, its varied activities for all tastes and ages, its exquisite cuisine and onboard service, always thinking in terms of customer satisfaction. Because the cruise line is Italian, art is paramount in the design of their ships, which feature original works of art in its various sections.

About Mundi Tours

In 1987, when few Dominican knew about cruise tourism, Mundi Tours employees took on the responsibility of introducing that market in the country, which was dead by then. That is when they acquired the representation of the Italian Costa cruise line, which offers cruises worldwide. They still represent it in the Dominican Republic.

Since its inception, Mundi Tours has made every effort to making a difference through personalized proposals and guidance, so that the customer always benefits from it. “Our specialty is in tailored travel, depending on each person’s or group’s budget and needs”, says Hooper.
