Located 66 kilometers from Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is Baní, land of hardworking men and women who have distinguished themselves in the various disciplines of the arts, sports and literature.

This city is bordered to the North by San José de Ocoa, to the South by the Caribbean Sea where Las Salinas and Las Dunas are located, to the East by San Cristóbal and to the West by Azua.

Agriculture is the main activity in the province, and among the crops it produces are vegetables, fruits, and coffee. Currently, the agribusiness industry is being developed.
On March 3rd of this year, the city commemorated the 250th anniversary of its founding, which took place in 1764, then under the status of Villa.

The Villa will blossom with the October 24th celebration of the 10th Regional Book Fair of Peravia 2014 (FRL – Peravia 2014), dedicated to Journalist Rafael Herrera, and which bears the slogan “Reading begins at home”.

During the 10-day fair, a massive program loaded with literature, music, theater and other cultural expressions, will take place to the delight of the attendees.

History of the regional fairs

In terms of the regional book fairs, it is worth noting that they were established by the Government, during his first administration of former President Leonel Fernández (1996-2000). The first fair took place in Santiago de los Caballeros, in 1997, for the 14 Northern provinces. Later, in 2005, Santiago hosted the regional fair once again.

To date, there have been regional fairs in La Romana, San Juan de la Maguana, La Vega, Espaillat, Barahona, Higuey and San Pedro de Macorís.

Baní is the cradle of great writers, such as Héctor Colombino Perelló, Héctor Incháustegui Cabral, Gastón Fernando Deligne, Manuel de Regla Mota, Marcos A. Cabral and Eladio Victoria, among others.

Likewise, this land has given rise to important athletes who have excelled in the major leagues. Among these are Miguel Tejada, Cristián Guzmán, Manny Aybar ,  Willy Aybar,  Erick Aybar, Mario Melvin Soto, Juan Melo, Luis Vizcaíno, Brayan Mejía, Ronald Soto and Luisín Mejía, the latter President of the Dominican Olympic Committee.
