Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 5th 2014

The Ministry of Culture, in cooperation with the Museum of Casas Reales, formally opened the solo exhibition “Genética” (Genetics), by artist Omar Molina, which consists of 23 artworks produced using a variety of techniques and in various formats, including drawing and painting

Art critic, Marianne de Tolentino, said that “we find in Omar Molina’s paintings an expression that curiously combines certain violence and feeling, that is, Oviedo’s social and humanistic intensity, with the balance between formal/informal exuberance, and the rich and variedcolor, either bright or next to the nocturna ….

The opening ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, accompanied by Ana Yee de Cury, Director of the Museum of Casas Reales, Omar Molina and his wife, Indhira Molina.

In her welcoming speech, Yee de Cury said that she was pleased to welcome on the premises of the Museum of Casas Realesthe exhibition “Genética” of this young Dominican artist, who from a very early age has been connected to the plastic arts and seems to have a promising future.

In return, Molina thanked the Almighty and his family, because they were essential for this exhibition project to become a reality. He said: “Thanks to my wife and children, my parents, and most especially to my grandfather, Ramón Oviedo, who has been my guide and north to follow”.

Art critic, Marianne de Tolentino, said that “we find in Omar Molina’s paintings an expression that curiously combines certain violence and feeling, that is, Oviedo’s social and humanistic intensity, with the balance between formal/informal exuberance, and the rich and variedcolor, either bright or next to the nocturnal. Both, in the figurative and abstract painting as well as in the gestural painting, the importance of movement traversing space is a constant, and within the apparent chaos the rigor of the structure is preserved.”

She added: “In the end, Omar Molina, immersed in research and reinterpretation, constantly tries to renew himself and refuses to submit to the stereotype of a pictorial discourse, even if itis masterful. He has his own ambition and his own perspectives. For the artist, whose exhibition is being showcased in the Museum of Casas Reales, reference certainly is not to be confused with a reverence.”

Molina was born on August 12 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.Since childhood he showed an inclination for art, which later led him to study advertising and graphic design at APEC.

His first solo exhibition took place in 2001 at Casa de Cultura of Puerto Plata. It was titled “Expresiones Sensoriales” (Sensory Expressions). He has participated in various group exhibits, including the Outdoor Art Fair organized by MUDIC; in the exhibit celebrating the 464th Anniversary of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD); and, at the XXII Biennial of Visual Arts in the Museum of Modern Art.

He has also participated in the Small Formats Exhibition in the ARAWAK Gallery and of Bodden Buen Arte; in the group exhibition “Jóvenes Artistas – Dos Generaciones” (Young Artists – Two Generations) at the Mesa Fine Art Gallery. In 2006, he presented his solo exhibition “Descriptivo” (Descriptive) at Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE). In 2007, he participated in the competition XI International Award for Painting “Miquel Viladrich” at the AJUNTAMENT DE TORRELAMEU, Spain.

Genética is open to the general public at the Museum of Casa Reales, from August 1st to August 15th, 2014, from 9:00 am to 5: 00 pm.
