The Ministry of Culture opened the first cultural village set up in the country on Wednesday, July 30th. It is located in the building where the Santa Rosa de Lima prison used to operate in La Romana.


It is the first cultural center of this type established in the country and it has been set up as part of the current Government’s plans, in the context of a number of projects to be implemented in cities located nearby tourist destinations.


The event will be headed by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, who will be accompanied by officials of the Ministry.


The old building where the Santa Rosa de Lima prison used to operate wasbuilt early in the last century. It was handed over to the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, in late 2012 by Colonel Víctor A. Mercedes Cepeda, Commander of the Sixth Infantry Brigade of the National Army.


The Provincial Director of Culture of La Romana, Luisa María Ortiz, said that the establishment of this center will benefit local and regional residents in a variety ofways, including the promotion of provincial and regional artistic values??, increased education and training of cultural assets; the development of creative enterprises; increased community participation in tourism offers, and the sale of local arts and crafts.


She added that, in addition to this, artists and managers will have the opportunity to showcase their talent and skills through their involvement in various activities in a diversity of fields such as theater, music, dance, crafts and singing, among others.
