The award offers 250 thousand pesos for each category.


The Ministry of Culture presented the “National Music Awards 2012”, whose objective is to promote music-making in the Dominican Republic, in both the classical and popular forms.
The event, which took place at 11:00 am at the Ministry’s headquarters, was chaired by Minister José Antonio Rodríguez. The following persons participated together with the Minister: Juan Tomás García, Coordinator of the Vice Ministry of Popular Participation and Creativity; Eduardo Díaz, Coordinator of the Vice Ministry of Cultural Industries; Luis Rivera, Coordinator of the Vice Ministry of Citizenship and Participation; and, Irasema Jiminián, Director of Communications, as well as the award winners and the members of the selection juries.


The opening remarks were offered by Juan Tomás García, who congratulated the award winners and announced the call for the 2014 National Music Awards, which will be open from April 8th to June 30th.


He also reported the approval of the Directorate of Art Research, the Virtual Museum of Dominican Music, and the preparation of the ATLAS of Dominican music.


The awards were presented to the winning musicians by Minister José Antonio Rodríguez and Juan Tomás García.


The award-winning categories in the classical music genre were: symphonic, choral and chamber. In the popular music genre: ballad, pop, jazz, and dance.


In the “symphonic” category, Manuel Antonio Tejada, under the pseudonym “GUATACA”, won the award with the piece “El sueño de mi padre” (My father’s dream). In the “choral” category, Emigdio Caonex Peguero won with his composition “Obertura Moringa” (Moringa Overture). While Manuel Antonio Tejada, under the pseudonym “Jutia”, won in the “dance” category, with the proposal “Solo con un beso” (Only with a kiss).


In the “pop” section, Juan Samuel Ernesto Martínez, using the pseudonym “Zion” won with the proposal “Dónde estarás” (Where would you be). Likewise, Manuel Antonio Tejada, under the pseudonym “Agricultor ” (Farmer) won the award in the “jazz music” category with the theme “Contando Nubes” (Counting Clouds).


José Enrique Espín Santiago, under the pseudonym “Yan”, won the award in the “folk” category with “Ritmos de Palos” (Rhythms of Palos); and, Ariela Mercedes Guridy Victoria, under the pseudonym “Isabela”, won the award in the “children music” category with the proposal “Sin Invitación” (Without Invitation).


The winners were selected by a jury with expertise in each category. In the classical music, the jury was made of: Julio De Windt, Jacinto Gimbernard and José Antonio Molina. The jury in the popular category was made of: Dionis Fernández, Jorge Taveras and Maridalia Hernández. And the jury in the choral music category was made of: Santiago Fals and Andrés Vidal.
