DANR presented film “Dominican Identity and Migrations To Hispaniola” As Part Of Free Workshops at National Conference in Miami.

The Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR) is proud to present the film “Dominican Identity and Migrations To Hispaniola” during the DANR 10th Annual National Conference. The documentary will be shown on Friday, November 30, 2007 at 9:00PM at the Radisson Hotel in Miami, Florida.

“We are fortunate to have this documentary as part of our national conference since it provides all Dominicans with information about their culture and history”, said Victor Capellan, President of DANR. “This documentary is a wonderful resource and worth viewing by all Dominicans and those interested in learning about the Dominican culture.” EThe film documents the roots of the “indios” (Tainos, Ciguayos y Caribes), Spanish, African, African-American, Caribbean, European, Arabic, Jewish, Asian and Puerto Rican migrations to Hispaniola and how these groups have contributed to the multicultural richness of the Dominican people. The documentary playing time is 1 hour and 50 minutes.

The film documentary was researched and produced by Néstor Montilla, a board member of the DANR and also Director of Public Relations at Hostos Community College, a campus of the City University of New York located in the Bronx, NY.
Montilla conducted the research with two professors from the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD): Dr. Irma Nicasio, and Dr. Odalis Perez, who recently published a book titled Migrations, Identities and Culture in the Dominican Republic that covers the same historical ground as the film.

The film was commissioned by Ana I. Garcia-Reyes, Director of International Programs for Hostos Community College and the 2002 President of the DANR.

On Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 10:00AM also at the Radisson Hotel, the DANR will host a panel titled “Dominicano Soy! Exploring our Dominican Identity”, a follow-up conversation to Friday’s showing of Hostos Community College study abroad documentary Dominican Identity and Migrations to Hispaniola.

This film as well as the ten workshops during the DANR 10th Annual National Conference are free and open to the public.
