This phase of the project features teachers giving workshops to parents to create awareness on tax education and citizenship values.

The General Directorate of the Internal Revenue (DGII) and the Ministry of Education (MINERD) concluded the second part of the Tax Education project “Una nueva forma de aprender a participar (A new way of learning to participate)” where they provided training for teachers on tax contents that are formally taught in private schools throughout the country.

The ceremony was held at the premises of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and was led by the Deputy Director of Planning and Development of Internal Revenue, Ms. Esther Hernández Medina, the Secretary of the Civic Education Consortium Advisory Council (Consejo Consultivo Consorcio Educación Cívica), Dr. Mu Kien Sang Ben, and Ms. Ynmaculada Torres, Project Coordinator at the Civic Education Consortium.

This phase of the project included the training of the new leaders of the parents associations of the Northern, Southern, and Eastern regions, and Santo Domingo, where awareness workshops took place in the areas of tax education and citizenship values related to the subjects studied in the classroom. 213 parents who are members of the associations participated in the workshop.

While delivering the main speech of the event, the Assistant Director of Planning and Development of Internal Revenue, Ms. Esther Hernández Medina praised the work done by the teachers and stressed the commitment of the DGII to train new fiscally responsible citizens.

“It is always a pleasure to work with you in this process; it is one of the favorites of the DGII, especially now given the interest shown by the teachers, who have become the protagonists of this process. The work that we are doing together is a commitment to the future, to contribute to the training of the teachers and to orient them toward a new culture of tax compliance. We hope that with this effort we will be able to move forward to becoming a better society”, said the officer.

Students from the National School for the Deaf were invited to this activity; they are included in the process of tax training, making the DGII the first government institution to train these special citizens.

For this second phase of the project “A New Way of Learning to Participate”, in August of 2013, a number of agencies renewed their commitment to train 250 teachers and 150 leaders of the parents associations from 100 schools in the Northern, Southern, and Eastern regions and in the province of Santo Domingo.

In April of 2012, the DGII and PUCMM signed the Training and Monitoring Agreement for the Inclusion of Tax Contents in the Moral and Civic Education Course in Private Schools, with the aim of including tax contents in private school courses. With that in mind, a training program was developed for teachers in private schools.
