Santo Domingo, February 20, 2014

The fair will be held on February 21, 22 and 23, 2014.
The Ministry of Culture (MINC), through the Directorate General for Management and Carnival, will open the III Carnival Artisans Fair 2014, on Friday, February 21st, on the grounds of Parque Colón (Colón Park) in the Colonial City.

The fair will be open to the public from 9 am to 10 pm, and will run until Sunday, February 23rd. Attendees will have the opportunity to find all types of objects related to Dominican folklore and carnival.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to take place at 5 pm and will be presided by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, and attended by other officers and representatives of the cultural sector.

Ramón Lachapelle, Director of Management and Carnival, reported that the fair intends for artisans from around the country, dedicated to producing pieces allegoric to the carnival, to have a sales venue for their creations, which is in line with the cultural industries policy promoted by the MINC.

The event will bring together 35 artisans from all provinces of the country, with equal numbers of tents, to give the public the opportunity to choose from the wide range of handmade items produced in the various provinces.

Some of the items on display are: masks, costumes, handbags, costumes, costume jewelry, necklaces, and key chains, among others.

Additionally, attendees will enjoy presentations by the Folkloric Ballet of the Ministry of Tourism, the National District City Council, the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, Alibandas and face painting, among other groups.

The event will also feature clay modeling workshops, mask designing, and puppet building for those interested in learning about carnival art.

The crafts activity has the support of the Ministry of Tourism, the National Police, the National Council for Disability (CONADIS), the Fire Department of Santo Domingo, the Tourism Police, and the Dominican Air Force.

The III Carnival Artisans Fair 2014 will close on Sunday with a performance by the Negrito de Villa, Sergio Vargas, in the Enriquillo Sánchez auditorium, located at the Ministry of Culture headquarters.
