The Government Suspends Christmas Festivities in Solidarity with Those Affected by Hurricane Noel

The Dominican government announced the suspension of all Christmas celebrations normally held in government institutions. The decision was taken as part of the austerity program underway to assist victims of Hurricane Noel and to show solidarity with their losses.

The decision, released in a communiqué by Luis Manuel Bonetti, administrative secretary in the president’s office, was directed toward local, regional, national and executive offices as well as centralized, decentralized and autonomous organizations.

The press release articulated that the Christmas period this year will be a time to express feelings of solidarity for those in need and to reaffirm the commitment of service toward the Dominican people through the various government institutions. Notwithstanding, this decision will not affect the giving of Christmas baskets, traditionally carried out by government institutions, to government employees.
