DREFF Opens Designated ‘Green’ Area to Help Promote Environment Preservation and Education Initatives
Santo Domingo, February 4, 2014

The Dominican Republic Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) and the Vida Azul Foundation signed an inter-institutional collaboration agreement on a significant initiative aimed at raising awareness in children and adults on the importance of preserving the environment. The educational program of activities will be carried out at the recently opened Espacio Verde (Green Space), located in the Sambil Commercial Center of Santo Domingo.

Espacio Verde, launched by Sambil and La Asociación Nacional on November 27th, was built with recycled materials and designed to be a recreational ‘green’ learning space where new ideas and environmental objectives can be discussed. Located on the 2nd level of the mall, the area is equipped for carrying out various activities such as lectures, seminars, workshops and film screenings, which are open to the public. It will also provide an opportunity for people to interact and learn directly from institutions implementing environmental educational initiatives in the Dominican Republic.

Espacio Verde’s educational program, which will be inaugurated next Thursday, February 20 at 5 pm, will offer weekly eco-documentary film screenings, as well as informative talks directed by Vida Azul Foundation staff.

As part of its Year-round Environmental Film Screenings Program, DREFF will make available its entire collection of more than 50 films, and help set up a program of screenings reflecting the environmental events calendar. In this way, the initiative will increase awareness of the most relevant environmental challenges of the era, and through the organization of panels, workshops and exhibitions will serve to promote best practices that can be implemented by all.

About the Dominican Environmental Film Festival
The Dominican Environmental Film Festival is an initiative of Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) and its sister organization in the United States, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development(GFDD). Created in 2011, the Dominican Environmental Film Festival seeks to raise public awareness and deepen understanding of environmental problems. It also serves as a catalyst for the creation of projects and programs that promote responsible attitudes about the environment, resulting from interaction of young people and the general public with teachers, experts, activists, filmmakers and leaders from the public and private sector.

Part of the mission of the DR Environmental Film Festival is to reach the largest number of communities, institutions and individuals throughout the country. With this goal in mind, the Festival organizes year-round film screenings in new and remote communities that generally do not have the opportunity to see these types of documentaries. With a wide selection of high quality films about serious environmental problems as well as debates and workshops, the year-round film program aims to encourage and inspire dialogue, public awareness and sustainable practices.

Join us in our staunch commitment to protect the environment!
