Master’s Program on Gender and Equality Policy in Education is Launched
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, 12/03/2013

The National Institute of Teacher Education and Training (INAFOCAM – Instituto Nacional de Formación y Capacitación del Magisterio), in coordination with the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC), recently launched a Master’s Program on Gender and Equality Policy in Education to train teachers of the Dominican Education System to investigate, design and implement programs that would help, starting in the schools, to ensure gender equality and equity.

The training program comes at a time when growing interscholastic conflicts and difficult couple relationships are poorly managed, resulting in negative consequences for those involved and their offspring.

32 teachers from the regional education office Nos. 10 and 15 from Santo Domingo; 17 from Monte Plata; 4 from San Cristobal, and 1 from Barahona, are participating in the Master’s Program on Gender and Equality Policy in Education.

This Master’s Program will last for eight quarters, during which the participants will take 24 classes aimed at addressing the issue of gender from an educational perspective.

The training program comes at a time when growing interscholastic conflicts and difficult couple relationships are poorly managed, resulting in negative consequences for those involved and their offspring.

In that sense, the general objective of the Master’s Program is to provide professionals in the field of education with the necessary skills to act as agents of change regarding the social constructs of gender, and to be able to influence, through their academic activities, on the transformation of the structures, where the male point of view occupies a central position.

As a result of the training program, teachers will be able to design and implement programs and educational practices that promote respect, from a gender perspective, and which would ensure, starting in school, the equality and equity between the sexes.

Among the subjects that will be addressed in the Master’s Program, are: human rights and legislation for gender equality; multiple discriminations and gender discrimination in the Dominican education system; planning of educational programs with a gender perspective; social constructs of femininity and masculinity; research methodology for gender studies and teaching methods for educational intervention.
