The fourth edition of the Mirabal Sisters Cultural Festival took place November 21 – 25 in the municipality of Salcedo, in the Hermanas Mirabal Province. This year, it was dedicated to Germany for its contributions to the development of this town, and also to Puerto Plata and Monte Cristi for their direct link to the heroes and martyrs of the 14th of June Movement, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their heroic deed.

During the celebration, Puerto Plata showed a strong presence under the coordination of the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Puerto Plata, the provincial government, the provincial department of culture, and the active participation of the Turisopp project. These agencies organized presentations and cultural activities, craft exhibitions, and permanent exhibitions of products and services. In addition, it is worth mentioning the production of art murals by visual artist Rafo Castillo.


On the opening day, a delegation of representatives of the provincial public and private institutions attended the opening events, which were headed by the President of the Organizing Committee of the Mirabal Sisters Cultural Festival and Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, Bautista Rojas Gómez, in addition to the Minister of the Presidency, Gustavo Montalvo.

Puerto Plata was represented by Juan Ventura, on behalf of the Provincial Governor; René Merette, Provincial Director to the Ministry of Culture; and Auribel Tejada, Executive Director of the province’s Chamber of Commerce and Production, among other authorities, as well as a large group of Puerto Plata residents who gathered for the celebration.


The Mirabal Sisters Cultural Festival is an initiative by social organizations and institutions from the Hermanas Mirabal province, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and other national institutions, whose name is given to honor sisters Minerva, María Teresa and Patria Mirabal, who lost their lives on November 25, 1960, while defending the national freedom.
