A delegation from the Chamber of Commerce of Puerto Plata participated in the Fortieth Edition of the General Assembly of the Latin-American Association of Chambers of Commerce (AICO) and the Inter-American Commission of Commercial Arbitration (CIAC), which was held between October 12-15 at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Punta Cana.

Nilson Martínez, vice-president, Auribel Tejada, executive director, and Elbis Peralta, spokesperson, attended the event with the intent of sharing their experiences with other representatives from the twenty-three countries from Latin America, the Iberian Peninsula and cities in the United States. They brought up their experiences on strengthening  inter-regional commerce and cooperation links between these countries, all thanks to their respective Chambers of Commerce.


During the event, representatives of Puerto Plata’s Chamber of Commerce participated in conferences covering topics such as the formalization of the informal sector, the role of the Chambers of Commerce, ethics of arbitration and precautionary measures, etc. Stories of successful examples from Spanish-speaking countries like Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Mexico and Spain were shared with the aim of learning from each other’s experiences on how services can be offered to help a productive and legitimate development of the Northern Region, with a stable business environment.


The AICO-CIAC Assembly presented the following reports: “The challenge with the informal economy in Latin-America,” “Demographics and operative modalities of the informal sector,” “Difficulties and objections to formalization: the Mipymes perspective,” “The Mexican experience of regulating the informality phenomenon,” “Weconnect,” “Business Formalization ‘The Chamber of Bogota’s success story,’” “Chile’s Experience,” “A new measures the Spanish government has put together in a recent legal text, which supports entrepreneurship,” and “Putting an end to illegal trade as a first step towards formalization.”


Participants at the congress included: José del Castillo, representing the Dominican President and Ministry of Industry and Commerce; the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santo Domingo, Pedro Pérez González; Roberto Illingworth, president of CIAC; Peter Hill, president of AICO; María Victoria Menicucci, president of the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santiago, and Fernando Puig, executive director of the afore-mentioned entity; among others.
