Today, in a ceremony held at the museum, the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, sworn in Juan Rafael López Concepción, as Director of the Underwater Cultural Heritage.


The new Director of the Underwater Cultural Heritage said that he has always been committed to preserving the Nation’s heritage because, during his career, he has held various positions in the heritage area of the Colonial City.


López Concepción said that the rescue of marine underwater heritage is a new experience for him, which will lead to making an inventory of all the objects that have been taken out, and to continue the rescue work of those still remaining underwater in the country’s territorial waters.


In that regard, he added that he will continue with the rescue of the pieces and objects that are located in sunken galleons or ships, which is a scientific process involving various steps, in order to determine the characteristics of their origin.


The Directorate of Underwater Cultural Heritage is the unit responsible for directing, supervising, evaluating researching, rescuing, restoring, preserving and enhancing the value of underwater cultural heritage, which has been discovered in inland waters, territorial sea and platforms of our maritime space.
