Culture releases the winning works of the 2011 Annual Literature Awards

The Directorate of Literary Management of the Ministry of Culture released the winning works of the “2011 Annual Literature Awards” during a ceremony that took place at the Ramón Oviedo Art Room at the Ministry’s headquarters. Writers and prominent personalities of the national cultural life attended the event.

The ceremony was led by the Director of Literary Management, Basilio Belliard; the General Director of Books and Reading, Valentín Amaro; the Director of the National Publishing House, León Félix Batista; and León David, one of the winners.

The works that were released are: “La secta del crisantemo (The chrysanthemum sect)” by Ángela Hernández, winner of the José Ramón López National Short Story Awared; “¿Y tu abuela dónde está? el negro en la historia y la cultura dominicana (And where is your grandmother? black in Dominican history and culture)” by Carlos Esteban Deive, winner of the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Essay Award; “Debí dibujar el mar en alguna parte (I should have drawn the sea somewhere)”, by Ariadna Vásquez Germán, winner of the Salomé Ureña de Henríquez National Poetry Award; and “La escandalosa vida y muy comentada historia de la casta Susana o las increíbles peripecias de la virtud (The scandalous life and much commented story of chaste Susana or the incredible adventures of virtue)” by León David, winner of the Cristóbal de Llerena National Theatre Award.

In his speech, Belliard said that “the Ministry of Culture has fulfilled its commitment and duty to edit unpublished works that have won the Annual Literature Awards, in different genres and forms, as stated in the rules of this annual event, the books that authors submit to the competition when they receive an award from the jury.”

He praised the quality of each of the winning works and the trajectory of each of the writers, as well as the awards they have received in recent times in their respective careers.
He then said, “These four works will strengthen the bibliographical catalog of books that have been edited by the Ministry, through the National Publishing House, led with such professionalism and efficiency by poet León Félix Batista, whom we congratulate for his careful editions.”

He declared that “on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, I congratulate the authors for these valuable works of essays, poetry, short stories, and theater.”
Writer Ángela Hernández thanked the authorities on behalf of the winners. She spoke of the passion for writing and the dedication of the authors to produce their works, and thanked all those who made the ceremony possible.
