Colonial City, Santo Domingo, 07/17/2013

T he Colonial Museum will present “Noche temática del Museo Alcázar de Colón,” a space for cultural recreation and analysis of issues concerning the museum, through roundtable discussions, presentations, lectures, dramatic readings, parades and street theater.

This initiative, to be held on the 25th of July at 7 p.m., is one more activity the Museum is implementing as part of its objective of attracting more Dominicans to the museums, so that they may become lovers and protectors of their national heritage.

The Director of the Museum, Raysa Astacio, who made the announcement, took the opportunity to urge Dominicans to visit the museums more regularly, after highlighting that these monuments “are ours and we must know them and care for them.”

In her efforts for making of this museum a must-see site, the official, together with her team, has designed a project aimed at instilling new life to the center, making it more attractive to Dominicans; for example, “Pieza del mes (Piece of the month),” is intended to showcase a selected piece for 30 days and display it in a prominent space so that it can be appreciated by the visitors, “we select a piece that has great importance and showcase it as a single piece, with an informative and descriptive caption on its history and creation, so that visitors attach greater importance to it.”

Other activities that are implemented and which are part of the management plan for the Alcázar de Colón Museum (PGMAC for its acronym in Spanish) are “Noche de poemas y cantos (Night of poems and songs),” an artistic and cultural initiative to bring different poetry and musical performances to the public this year, and “Museo Alcázar de Colón para los niños (Alcázar de Colón Museum for children),” which highlights social and cultural values through fun and games and artistic creations focusing on cultural history, and which contrast with today’s world.

The work strategy also includes other cities, and that is the reason behind the design of the program “El Museo se proyecta hacia las provincias, con exposiciones de artes visuales (The museum reaches out to the provinces, through exhibitions of visual arts),” which consists of bringing the pieces outside of the walls of the museum to a space that is more accessible to the public as public art, showcasing the diversity of the national and international talent. “For example, to Moca, in the Espaillat Province, we took a photo exhibition of the times when the Museum was in ruins and after its restoration; we brought a comparison of how it was before and after, and that was extraordinary.”

She said that the next exchange will be with the Province of Bonao, where the exhibition “Primicias de América” will be presented through the project “The museum reaches out to the provinces, through exhibitions of visual arts.” The presentation of a piano concert at the front of the Museum in the Colonial City is also under consideration.
