T
he Image 83 Foundation (FundaciónImagen 83) and the Image Center (Centro de la Imagen) inaugurated the exhibition “Crossover, Art and Science” by Soucy de Pellerano and Paula Messina. The opening ceremony was held in the Image 83 Foundation’s facilities located at 456 ArzobispoMeriño Street, Ciudad Colonial, where the attendees included artists’ families, photography buffs and the like, all enjoying a night of art in an air of camaraderie.

Science isn’t foreign for Pellerano, who before graduating from the School of Fine Arts had gotten her Doctorate in Pharmacy at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo.

Crossover, Art and Science is the name given to the collection being presented by Soucy de Pellerano and Paula Messina –artists from different generations- in which they switch rolls: one artist uses radiographic films to express her art and a doctor that specializes in imaging to indistinctly use photography and radiographic films to make art. The exhibition is composed of around 30 pieces of diverse formats and was curated by Carlos Acero Ruiz.

Science isn’t foreign for Pellerano, who before graduating from the School of Fine Arts had gotten her Doctorate in Pharmacy at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. Messina has always had a profession that crosses creativity and science in the reading and interpretation of images she does every day at her practice.

Both artists share the theme of women, from different perspectives. Pellerano uses maternity, suffering, oppression, and the reinterpretation of great works of art as well as the life of internationally recognized female artists, as in the case of Frida Kahlo. Messina’s work, on the other hand, is more conceptual, direct and underpinned by scientific rigor. Her work takes us to feminine details and objects, fantasies and abandoned accessories from her patients who have undergone medical imaging, mainly linked to breast cancer.

“In both cases a spiritual and ritualistic component is perceivable. In spite of the formal differences in the resolution of their work, there are similarities to be found betweenthese two artists, who combine science and art through signs and symbols,  particularly highlighting the sensibility that can only be expressed with the eyes of a woman,” said Carlos Acero Ruiz, curator of the works.

The show will remain open until the beginning of August. During the course of the exhibition activities related to the theme of the exposition will be held, as well as a discussion with the artists.
