T  he Dominican Association of Art Critics (ADCA in Spanish) held its 11th Critics Awards ceremony in honor of the centenary of the birth of our National Poet Pedro Mir, a founding member of the ACDA in 1981 and the first president of the association.


The Critics Awards 2012 ceremony was held in collaboration with the Cultural APEC in the Jose Maria Bonetti-Burgos Hall at APEC University. The ceremony was conducted by the current president of the ADCA and Vice President of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), Mr. Carlos Acero Ruiz, accompanied by Arq. Gamal Michelén, Ms. María Elena Ditrén, Ms. Myrna Guerrero and Arq. Guadalpe Casanovas, members of the Critics Awards.


The awards were granted after an analysis and consideration of a number of activities related to the world of visual arts in the Dominican Republic.


The winner of the Individual Exhibition at Museums and Cultural Centers was the Retrospective 1962-2012 of Elsa Nunez at the Museum of Modern Art (MAM); the winner of Collective Exhibition in Museums, Galleries and Cultural centers went to Memento Mori, Photography at MAM; the Individual Exhibition in Galleries and commercial spaces was for “More of the same?” by García Cordero. Lyle O ‘Reitzel; and Exhibition of Foreign artists presented in the Dominican Republic was for Man Ray in the MAM, which was curated by Marisa Oropesa and Maria Toral.


The award for Visual arts initiative was for the education and outreach program at the Cultural Center and Novocentro Mirador: a series of 24 cultural lectures given by lecturer Arq. Gamal Michelén; and in the Visual Arts Publication / Book specialty the winner was Santiago of the Knights: visions and beats from Heart of the City. Ministry of Culture.


The prize specializing in visual arts publication/catalogue went to The City: a space differentiator. Youth Award of the Image: Photography and Video. The Image Center; Art Criticism in media went to Bingene Armenteros. Unique woman and blog; Curatorial Work of Critics was awarded to Carlos Acero Ruiz; and the Special Critics’ Award went to Photo Images 2012. Image Center. Picture 83 Foundation, Inc.


In addition to the awards for activities relevant to exhibitions and museums in 2012, Individual Recognition was made to honor outstanding artist José Rincón Mora; and Arquitexto magazine received Institutional Recognition.
