Dominican Residents of New York for the First Festival of Santo Domingo

The journalist Roberto Geronimo, coordinator in New York of the First Festival of Santo Domingo 2007 put forward a list of Dominican artists and residents in New York who might be interested in participating in what is sure to be the most ambitious project ever undertaken in the history of this event in the Dominican Republic. The festival is expected to utilize 7 stages that will be placed along a 4-kilometer stretch of Santo Domingo’s beautiful seaside boardwalk (malecon) which will be used for more than 100 musical groups as well as radio and television stars over the course of 16 hours on Sunday October 14th.

The event, created by the artistic entrepreneur Luis Medrano, approved by the municipality and  presided over by Roberto Salcedo, seeks to create a precedent in Latin America in the hopes of positioning the city as a tourist destination by featuring its cultural, colonial, folkloric, gastronomic, water and sea sport attractions while also showing off its musical talents that include expertise in various rhythms such as merengue, the bachata, the son, salsa, local groups, tropical rock, reggae, merenhosue and hip hop. Traditional ballads and Caribbean dance will also be on display.

Since the announcement of this ambitious project there has been a great deal of movement all over the country and the region due to the sheer magnitude of this broad artistic and international attraction.  The event has hit cyberspace by way of various websites thus initiating news coverage  around the world as various media outlets are featuring the festival in their upcoming entertainment sections. In addition, tour operators, hotel owners and the media offices of potential entertainers are also feeling the buzz.

The festival, scheduled to begin at 10 am on Sunday October 14th ,  hopes to showcase the country’s 14 most popular DJs, some 14 comedians and humorists and more than 60 radio and TV announcers.

Among the well-known New York figures who will likely take part are Jose Alberto, Santiago Cerón, Cuco Valoy, Fausto Rey, El Pacha, Janeiro Matos, Alipio Coco Cabrera, Celines Toribio, Jhonny Pacheco, Fulanito, Chino Aguacate, Mala Fe, Amalfi and Jessie Ramírez, among others.
