The Directorate General of Internal Taxes (DGII – Dirección General de ImpuestosInternos) published the 2012 Statistical Bulletin on the Dominican RepublicVehicular Fleet, which reveals an increase of 3,052,686 units, with a record 117,195 more incoming vehicles than in 2011. According to the results of this report,which coversthe period up to December 31 of last year, of the total number of vehicles 51.3%are motorcycles and 22.8% are automobiles.

The document prepared by the DGII’s Economic Research Department states that the total revenue receipts corresponding to motor vehicles in 2012 was RD$6,484.5 million, surpassing the 2011 revenueby RD$316.7 million. These figures correspond to the following transactions: the revenue collected for the emission of first time plates and vehicle transfers in 2012 increased by RD$228.3 and RD$111.0 million, respectively;the revenue collected for the renewal of tags decreasedby RD$31.3 million; the revenue collection for duplicate registrations increased by RD$3.4 million and the revenue collection for change/renewal of plates grew by RD$5.2 million.


By Province, Vehicle Type, Make and Color


The 2012 Statistical Bulletin on the Dominican RepublicVehicular Fleet also provides data on the number of vehicles by Province, color and make. The classification of the vehicular fleet by province reveals that 59.8% of vehicles are distributed among the National District, Santo Domingo, Santiago de los Caballeros and La Vega; and the remaining 40.2% are located in the other provinces that make up the rest of the country.


As for the type of vehicles, of the total number of automobiles, 42.4% is located in the National District, 21.82% in Santo Domingo, 10.7% in Santiago de los Caballeros, and the remaining 25% is distributed among the other provinces. Regarding buses, 41.9% of the total number is located in the National District, 19.0% in Santo Domingo,7.8% in Santiago de los Caballeros, and the remaining 31.2% is distributed among the other provinces. With respect to motorcycles, 21.1% of the total number is located in the National District, 12.6% in Santo Domingo, 7.6% in La Vega, and 58.7% is distributed among the other provinces. Of the total number of jeeps, 34.0% is in the National District, 18.4% in Santo Domingo, 13.2% in Santiago de los Caballeros, and the remaining 34.4% is distributed among the other provinces.


In regard to the country of origin, the Dominican vehicular fleet is dominated by Japanese vehicles, which represent 75.7% of the total number of automobiles and 70.1% of jeeps. On the other hand, according to the color preference,in 2012 the predominant car colors were gray, white and blue, with a share of 18%, 17.2% and 16.8%, respectively.
