The UNDER MINERVA ART GALLERY AND EVENT SPACE was founded in 2009 by Trinidadian Chris Achong and Dominican Mata Yeni. It originated in the idea of ??opening an art gallery in Park Slope, Brooklyn,as a place where unknown artists seeking to exhibit their works could have the option to do so in a simple and intimate gallery that invites the public to explore new art forms. According to the owners, “the name comes from the mythological goddess Minerva, protector of our community.” “Her statue is located at the highest point of Greenwood Cemetery, commemoratingthe Battle of Brooklyn during the American Revolution. She represents resolution in times of war, commerce, the arts, music and wisdom, much of what our gallery is about and which exists within. Up the hill from our gallery she looks at her friend, Lady Liberty, and greets visitors across the harbor; it is a beautiful view that many Brooklynites have fought to protect,” they say.
